North East With Dogs

Home / Days out / Dog-friendly beaches

Most beaches on this coast welcome dogs for most of the year. The catch is summer: several councils close part of a beach to dogs, and in this region those bans usually run from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those dates, and outside the marked zones, dogs are generally allowed. Signs at the beach always have the final say, so read them before you let the dog off.

Shorebirds nest on some beaches in spring and summer, so keep dogs close where you see fenced or signed areas. At Embleton Bay and Newton Links, the National Trust asks for dogs on a short lead around the Long Nanny shorebird site at Beadnell Bay in the breeding season.

Where these rules come from

Each beach rule comes from the council's own dog control order (a Public Spaces Protection Order), checked on 26 October 2026. Councils review these orders every few years, so if the signs on the day say something different, follow the signs and let us know. For walks, castles and gardens, see all dog-friendly days out.
