Breaking the A66 with a dog

The A66 is the main route between the A1 at Scotch Corner and the Lake District. These pubs sit on or just off it and let dogs in, so you can stop for a proper lunch instead of a service-station car park.

Just off the A1 near Scotch Corner, so it's the first stop if you're coming from the south. Dogs are welcome in some of the public rooms and there are big dog beds. It's a restaurant as much as a pub, so book for food.

Right on the A66 itself, so there's no detour at all. The bar is dog friendly, with a log fire in winter. Check before taking the dog into the restaurant.

  3. Bay Horse, Ravensworth

A short detour south of the A66 to a village green. Dogs on leads can come into the bar and the snug, and there's a garden at the back for a leg-stretch.

  4. Four Alls, Ovington

A detour north of the A66 towards the Tees, worth it if you have time. A small stone village inn described as dog friendly, with a beer garden at the back.
