A day out in Teesdale with your dog

A west-bound route from castle parkland to the high fells, with a dog-friendly stop at every point. Drive between stops; each one has parking.

  1. The deer park at Raby Castle
    Morning

    Raby Castle deer park

Start at Staindrop with a walk through the deer park and walled gardens at Raby Castle grounds. Dogs need to be on leads, and they can come into the Vinery Café for a coffee. The castle itself and the children's play area are dog-free.

  2. The Three Horseshoes on Galgate, Barnard Castle
    Late morning

    Barnard Castle

Head west to Barnard Castle for a wander through the market town. In warmer months, the Three Horseshoes on Galgate lets dogs into its sheltered beer garden.

    Outside only
  3. The Kirk Inn on the green at Romaldkirk
    Lunch

    Romaldkirk

Carry on up the dale to Romaldkirk, where the Kirk Inn welcomes dogs beside its open fire, and the Rose & Crown lets clean dogs on leads into its bar. Ring ahead to check where you can sit. Skip the Red Lion on the way if you have the dog with you: it doesn't allow dogs inside.

  4. High Force waterfall on the River Tees
    Afternoon

    High Force waterfall

Finish at High Force Waterfall, where a short woodland walk brings you to the falls. Keep dogs on leads throughout, and close by in the car park because there is livestock in the next fields.

  5. The High Force Hotel in Forest-in-Teesdale

    Staying over

Make a weekend of it at the High Force Hotel next to the falls, which has pet-friendly rooms for £10 a stay, or the Rose & Crown back in Romaldkirk, which recommends its patio rooms for dogs.
